Introduction:
THE DNB programme of Dr Agarwal’s eye hospital is conducted and managed under its unit: The Eye Research Center. The eye research center was started by Dr Jaiveer Agarwal and Dr Tahira Agarwal as their free eye care unit. It conducts free eye camps all over Tamil Nadu and neighboring states. The team of postgraduates, optometrists and nurses is sent out to villages, towns and districts wherein the postgraduates get a wide clinical experience hands on. The care ranging from treatment to surgeries is carried out by consultants along with postgraduates.
Since when:
The DNB programme has been established more than twenty years ago .since then it has successfully trained more than 150 postgraduates many of whom are now famous and established eye surgeons throughout India.
Features of DNB programme:
Clinical:
This forms the first and foremost part of the training. It deals with training the candidate to see and examine the cases that present in the opd. Initially an induction programme takes place where the candidates are taught basics such as refraction and then followed by slit lamp examinations. Each candidate is posted with consultants in the opd where they learn complete clinical workups. Indirect ophthalmoscopy, iop measurement, gonioscopy and handling all ophthalmic instruments is taught to post graduates.
Study:
The classes are taken on case presentation once a week, didactic lectures thrice a week and journal club presentations once a week. Attendance I n all the classes, case presentations and journal; presentations is absolutely compulsory. Presence of Less than 80%attendance of postgraduates and a poor academic record will lead to withholding of completion certificates.
Tests and examinations:
At the end of the first year, the postgraduates undergo an internal examination on basics of ophthalmology: anatomy, optics, physiology of the eye. There are written and oral tests conducted with marks at the end of lectures on each topic being taught in class. Appraisal of log book and attendance is carried out every 3 months. Once in 6 months, DNB sends an external for appraisal of candidates wherein as per DNB guidelines, candidates are assessed in practicles as well as written examinations.
Logbook:
Each candidate is given a log book for recording their interesting clinical cases seen, cases discussed, presented, surgeries done and minor procedures done. Proper maintenance of log books is a must for all candidates.
Surgical expertise:
Surgical training is started once the candidate becomes well versed with handling all kinds of clinical cases right from examinations to treatments. The candidates are posted in the operating room on a rotation basis and at these postings each candidate is exposed to step wise presurgical and surgical workup, presurgical preparation. This is then followed by stepwise surgical exposure under supervision of expert consultant surgeons. Only when the candidate is found to be well versed in all the surgical steps are they given independent surgeries. The surgeries decided upon the aptitude of the candidate and the surgical hands of the candidate. At the end of the training each candidate is well equipped with all the basic ophthalmic surgeries.
How to apply:
Step 1: For all primary candidates (three year DNB) and two year dnb (post DO) a CET (common entrance test) is conducted as per the dates given by the DNB. The examination held at a date and site advertised by the DNB takes place twice a year.
Step 2: Once the examinations are cleared CNB gives a rank and merit list. As per the merit list the candidate is asked to come for the centralized counseling.
Step 3: centralized counseling that takes place at the DNB building, in Delhi.
Step 4: each candidate will choose their center of preference and depending on the availability of seats in that center; they are admitted to the centers of their choice.

Optometry Course
Why Choose Optometry?
Looking for a dynamic and challenging career which allows you to help people, achieve personal growth, community respect, job flexibility and financial success and offers virtually unlimited opportunities? Consider optometry! As primary eye care providers, Optometrists examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eyes and associated structures as well as diagnose related systemic conditions.
Optometrists examine the internal and external structure of the eyes to diagnose eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts and retinal disorders; systemic diseases like hypertension and diabetes; and vision conditions like nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia. They also determine the patient's ability to focus and coordinate the eyes, to judge depth and to see color accurately.
They prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses, low vision aids, vision therapy.
Optometrists work in private practices, multidisciplinary medical practices, hospitals, teaching institutions, research positions, community health centers and the ophthalmic industry. Optometrists can also build successful careers in the military, public health or government service.
There is a need for optometrists in all types of practice, particularly in the areas of pediatric optometry and squint evaluation. Practice opportunities exist throughout India with a particular need in rural areas.
Optometrists are required to complete a four-year graduate degree program to earn their degree in optometry. The four-year program includes classroom and clinical training in geometric, physical, physiological and ophthalmic optics, ocular anatomy, ocular disease, ocular pharmacology, neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of the vision system, color, form, space, movement and vision perception, design and modification of the visual environment, and vision performance and vision screening.
Unique to the educational requirements for optometrists is the advanced study of optics, the science of light and vision, and extensive training in lens design, construction, application and fitting.
Since optometrists are members of the primary health care team, optometric education also includes a thorough study of human anatomy, general pharmacology, general pathology, sensory and perceptual psychology, biochemistry, statistics and epidemiology.
What Optometrists Do?
Until recently, optometrists were considered good for just one thing: prescribing glasses for the visually impaired. Today, optometry is a health profession that has come of age and plays an ever-increasing and vital role in primary eye care. The ascendancy of optometry as a profession owes its success to rigorous and demanding training in optometric colleges and universities, modern technological advances that have contributed to the expansion of the scope of practice of optometry, and the burgeoning awareness that optometry is at the vanguard of primary eye care. But the full range of optometric practice is not yet fully known by the general public. This, however, is about to change as many eye hospitals have realized the importance of optometrist.
The old optometry was limited almost exclusively to fitting eyeglasses, where as today’s optometrists examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases of the eye. In addition to providing treatments such as contact lenses, corrective and low vision devices, optometrists today are authorized to use diagnostic and therapeutic pharmaceutical agents to treat anterior segment disease, glaucoma, and ocular hypertension in developed countries.
As primary eye care practitioners, optometrists often are the first ones to detect such potentially serious conditions as diabetes, hypertension and arteriosclerosis. In fact, today optometrists work closely with ophthalmologists, neurologists, psychologists and other health care practitioners. Except for invasive procedures, the line between optometry and ophthalmology has become increasingly blurred and the two professions are gradually developing a symbiotic-if not sympathetic-relationship.
As with medicine, optometry offers a variety of areas of specialization. Practitioners wishing to focus in areas other than general practice may select such specialties as contact lenses, vision therapy and orthoptics, pediatrics, low vision, sports vision, head trauma, learning disabilities and occupational vision. Optometrists may and often concentrate on one or two specialty areas of optometry.
SCOPE OF OPTOMETRY
An Optometrist has the following career opportunities:- An Optometrist can start his/her own clinic ,optical shop, lens manufacturing unit ,etc.
- An Optometrist can work for eye testing ,contact lenses, squint exercises etc with optical shops, eye doctors, contact lenses and ophthalmic industry, hospital, eye departments.
For the population of 980 crore approx, the ratio of qualified eye care professional to patients with eye problem is very poor, today the optical trade needs at least 20,000 qualified optometrist to man the dispensing optical outlets.
