What is Dry Eye Syndrome?

  • Have you ever experienced burning or pain in your eye after working at your laptop for a longer duration?
  • Have you experienced the feeling of having sand or something ‘gritty’ in your eyes?
  • These could be signs of a condition called Dry Eye Syndrome.
  • Dry Eye Syndrome is a condition that occurs where tears aren’t able to provide sufficient lubrication for the eyes. Any change in the quality or quantity of tears can affect the level of moisture in the eye.

 

What causes Dry Eye Syndrome?

  • Prolonged exposure to air conditioned Environment
  • Prolonged staring/usage of computer/mobile phones (Computer Vision Syndrome).
  • The natural aging process, especially menopause problems and hence women are more affected by dry eyes.
  • Certain medical conditions including diabetes, thyroid disorders and Vitamin A deficiency
  • Side effects of certain drugs like antihistamines

 

 

Treatment for Dry Eye Disease

Treatment for Dry Eyes depends mainly on the underlying cause of the condition.

It could include:

  • Lubricant drops
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • IRPL (Intense Regulated Pulsed Light) Therapy
  • Lacrimal plugs
