Meet Our Regional Head of Clinical Services at New Delhi

Professor Dr. Jeewan Singh Titiyal, a Padma Shri awardee 2014, is a distinguished ophthalmologist who has made monumental contributions to the field of ophthalmology both in India and internationally. He is widely recognized for his expertise and leadership in Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgery.

Professor Titiyal served as the former Chief of the Dr. R P Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences and Dean (Research) at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He completed his MBBS at AIIMS (New Delhi), followed by Junior and Senior Residency in Ophthalmology at AIIMS (New Delhi), specializing on Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgery.

Professor Titiyal’s academic and research achievements are truly remarkable, with over 500 publications, more than 8000 citations, and seven books, alongside more than 60 chapters. His extensive workplaces him among the top-cited ophthalmology researchers in India (2021-2024), according to the Stanford University list of the top two percent most cited scientists worldwide. He made history as the first Indian to perform live surgery at the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS) in the USA.

With over 2000 lectures delivered, he has been an invited faculty at more than 200 international and national conferences, including over 100 live surgical demonstrations. He has won over 30 Best Paper, Best Poster, and Best Video Awards and has contributed two patents to the field of ophthalmology.

Professor Dr. Jeewan Singh Titiyal’s illustrious career has been recognized with numerous prestigious national and international honors, further solidifying his status as a leader in the field of ophthalmology. His contributions to the field, both in academia and research, have earned him widespread recognition and accolades. At the R P Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at AIIMS, he played an instrumental role in establishing a world-class facility for patient care, teaching, and research. He has trained over 2,000 students, teachers, and ophthalmic leaders. He has performed over 100thousand ophthalmic surgeries for people from all spectrums of society including common man to the premier of the countries.

 Professor Titiyal was also pivotal in formulating ophthalmic guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic and has worked with various national bodies such as the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, ICMR, and WHO on national surveys related to blindness.

His commitment to healthcare extends to remote tribal areas in Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Ladakh, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, where he worked on providing comprehensive healthcare services. Additionally, he conceptualized the innovative use of drones to transport corneal tissue for eye banks and transplant centres. He has also served as the member and Chairperson of the National PM Relief Fund.

Professor Titiyal holds significant leadership positions in national ophthalmic societies. He is the current President (Elect) of the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS), President of the Indian Society of Cornea & Keratorefractive Surgeons (ISCKRS), and Past President of the Delhi Ophthalmological Society and the Forum of Ophthalmic Teachers of India.
